The Esopus … the most cantankerous and egalitarian
of all the Catskill streams … had as its central
figure during the classic era of Catskill fly-fishing,
a man well-suited to its personality.
Ray Smith of Phoenicia, New York, was a woodsman,
dairy farmer, baseball player, town justice,
road construction grade foreman, bear hunter, guide,
and, most notably, a superb angler and fly-tier.
